Most Americans have heard of the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, who determines when Spring will arrive based on whether or not he sees his shadow. However, you may not be aware of other animals that are used as a sign of Spring.
The woolly bear caterpillar may see its shadow on Groundhog’s Day, meaning that we will have another bout of winter weather. As the tradition goes, if you see a woolly bear caterpillar outside on Groundhog’s Day and it has a shadow, buckle down for a long winter. In Canada, the animal that is most popular for seeing its shadow and predicting winter is an albino groundhog named Wiarton Willie of Wiarton, Ontario.
