With Trampolines Comes the Risk of Injury

Why is it so expensive to insure a trampoline?

Children love to jump and play and many parents love to be able to purchase their little ones a trampoline for their at-home outdoors fun.  The bad news is that according to Spine Universe.com, most trampoline accidents occur at a private residence and are caused by children bumping in to each other, attempting wild stunts or falling off of the apparatus while at play.  The American Academy of Pediatrics has even gone as far as to officially recommend that parents refrain from purchasing a trampoline.

How dangerous can the trampoline really be?

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports that the most common types of injuries sustained by children on trampolines are fractures and sprains.  However there are many children who have received serious injuries including some that have resulted in spine injuries that have caused paralysis and in some instances even death.

Staggering Statistics

An alarming twenty percent of all trampoline injuries cause spinal cord damage.  Statistics from the year 2006 credited trampolines for more than 109,522 injuries.  By age range that number reveals quite a bit.

  • 15,541 of those injured were 4 years or younger
  • 71,265 were age 5 to 14 years old
  • 14,571 were teens/adults ages 15-24
  • 7,836 of those injured were between ages 25-64
  • 309 were over 65
  • 104,729 were treated by emergency physicians and released.
  • 4.793 were either hospitalized or died from their injuries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is taking its strongest stance yet against kids using trampolines at home, saying there’s no clear way to reduce their chances of getting hurt: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/pediatricians-warn-against-trampoline-use-at-home-citing-injury-risks/
